Umar was fond of recording Jewish Stories and Talks. Why??

Once Umar bin Khattab (who later became the 2nd Khalifa the Sunni Muslims) told the Holy Prophet: "We hear from the Jews some interesting stories and talks. Will it be all right for us to to write down those things?" The Holy Prophet said: "Are you wandering as the Jews and the Christians wandered? Verily, I have brought this (religion) to you, bright and pure; and if Musa were alive he would have had no option but to follow me." (1)
