The above verse was revealed to the Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) regarding the day of judgement. These will be the words in which humans wished that they never came into existence. This will take place when he / she sees the torment of hell that awaits them. The irony of this all is that Umar despite his so called knowledge of the Qura'an wished for something contrary to that. Perhaps this is due to the fact he began to see the eternal fires of Hell which awaited him. Umar towards his end of his life regrets and laments the following words.
Umar Ibn Khattab said: “I wish I were a sheep or a lamb, fattened by my owners to their hearts’ desire. Then, when I became as fat as could be, people they liked would visit them, and they would turn part of me into roast meat and part into jerky. Then they would eat me, and push me out in the form of feces. This way, I would never have been a human.”
